16-year-old James O’Connor from Bangor, started suffering from severe migraines five years ago. Fed up of taking various migraine medications, he visited Apex Headache Clinic in an attempt to get even a little help. James, when did your migraines begin?
My migraines began around 5 years ago and they started completely out of no where. I went to my GP, and they gave me different tablets over the years however the medication would always stop helping and then the dose would need to be increased until it stopped working once again. This was a constant cycle of increasing dosage and changing the tablets but getting very little relief. Eventually I was sent to see a Consultant Neurologist.
How did the pain affect your life?
I would be in terrible pain when a migraine came on. I would have to lie in bed and I missed a lot of school. At its worst I would have a migraine every day and was in constant pain.
What led you to Apex Headache Clinic?
I was recommended to go to Apex Headache Clinic by my Consultant Neurologist. After having lots of tests including a brain MRI which all came back normal, the Consultant Neurologist suggested that my migraines could be stemming from my neck and that they would refer me to Apex Headache Clinic for specialist physiotherapy treatment with one of their headache physiotherapists.
How has your life changed since having treatment?
Since having treatment for my constant headache and daily migraines I feel so much better. I haven’t had a migraine in over 8 weeks and I’m completely free from all medication, which is amazing! I am doing my GCSEs currently and I have been able to study and concentrate in school without having the pain and distraction of a migraine. I can also make plans and hangout with my friends like everyone else my age.
What advice would you offer someone suffering from migraines?
