“Having treatment for my migraines has changed my life!”

28-year-old Lauren from Lisburn was suffering with migraines from when she was a teenager. In the hope of starting a family she was desperate to find a drug-free solution to treat her migraines. Here, she shares how Apex Headache Clinic’s unique regime of specialist manual physiotherapy treatment for migraines and headaches, called The Nelson Headache Approach™, cleared her migraines.

Lauren, when did your migraines begin?

I started getting migraines 12 years ago, when I was 15 or 16 years old. They started out of no where with no real reason. I attended my GP loads of times and trialled many different medications, but nothing worked preventively to stop me getting the migraines. My only option was to treat the migraines when I would feel them coming on, with different tablets. I was always checking I had enough tablets and was afraid of what would happen if I took a migraine and ran out of them.

How did the pain affect your life?

At the start I got the odd migraine here and there but the longer it went on, the frequency of them got worse to the point where I was having 3 or 4 migraines per week. I would spend my whole day just hoping I wouldn’t get a migraine. I would avoid going to certain places or doing certain things as I thought that will bring on a migraine or if it was a long drive, I’d think I’ll have a migraine by the time I got to my destination.  I missed out on so many things as I would have to say no or cancel plans.

What led you to Apex Headache Clinic?

I was hoping to start a family, and I knew that I wouldn’t cope having migraines and not being able to take my medication if I was pregnant. I also thought about the future and how would I be able to look after a child while suffering 3 or 4 migraines a week. I saw a post on Facebook and I thought that I have to try this, I have to do something! I then phoned up and booked an initial consultation with one of the headache physiotherapy specialists.

How has your life changed since having treatment?

I started seeing my headache physiotherapist in October 2024 and then fell pregnant in January 2025. I now have a beautiful little boy! I was able to come off all of my medication before I was pregnant, and I would say that having treatment at Apex Headache Clinic has changed my life. I now only have the odd headache, and I continue to see Nicole every 6 weeks for maintenance to keep the migraines away.
