Emma, tell us how your headaches began
About four years ago I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. It was removed and following radiotherapy, I thankfully received the ‘all clear’. However, I felt like I didn’t get to celebrate this because my health never seemed to get back on track. Following treatment for my cancer, about four years ago, I began experiencing headaches. Initially, these were infrequent but they gradually became worse over time so that I was suffering from full blown migraines, which would last days at a time.
How did the pain affect your life?
It was truly awful. When I had a migraine, the only thing I could do was to take to my bed. The pain was so sharp and the only way I could make it bearable was to lie in a dark room in the same position. I couldn’t move my head at all because the pain was so bad. This could last for a couple of days and the experience of it would take me another few days to get over it. It was a never ending, vicious cycle. I have three children and I was struggling to cope with everyday life. My husband was working in England at the time, so I had to rely on my parents for help with the kids, such as doing the school run. I hated that things I usually enjoyed doing were impossible.
What led you to Apex Headache Clinic?
