I am finally migraine-free after 14-years, thanks to Apex Headache Clinic

For 32-year-old nurse Ruth Graham from Antrim, life was a struggle. For 14 years, she had been suffering with the devastating effects of migraines, which often left her house bound. The pain was horrendous and she was desperate to find a cure. After a friend recommended Apex Headache Clinic, Ruth booked an appointment in the hope of getting even a little relief. Here, she shares how the clinic’s unique regime of specialist manual physiotherapy treatment for headaches and migraines, called The Nelson Headache Approach™, cleared her migraines, meaning that she could finally enjoy life again.

Ruth, when did your migraines begin?

The first time I ever had a migraine I was 14 years ago. The pain was so bad that it woke me up in the middle of the night and I went straight to hospital. Since then, migraines have always been a part of my life and I’ve done everything possible to try to clear them, including numerous GP appointments, MRIs, CT scans, blood tests and I even had a lumbar puncture. I have also been on every painkiller known, which have done very little to ease the pain. It was so frustrating to never be able to find out what was causing them or how to stop the pain.

How did the pain affect your life?

It honestly was horrendous and consumed my life. I became known as “Ruth and her headaches” and it was the first thing anyone asked me about. I was constantly having to take days off work and social occasions were a nightmare. I’ve had to leave so many weddings early to go home and throw up by the time the speeches started. On several hen weekends, I wasn’t able to leave the hotel. My longest ever migraine was at the start of this year, which lasted a total of 5 weeks. It was awful.

What led you to Apex Headache Clinic?

A colleague at work recommended it. Her friend had great success the year previously and desperate to find some relief I decided to give it a go. With my migraines, I would often have neck or shoulder pain but I didn’t connect this as the cause. When Michelle diagnosed my migraines as stemming from my neck, it just made sense. After only a couple of weeks, I started to feel relief and gradually, over the next few months, the frequency of my migraines lessened. Now, like everyone, I still get the odd headache but to go from having constant migraines, to a headache once a month is a massive difference.

How has Apex Headache Clinic changed your life?

It’s actually indescribable. It’s like having a completely new life. All I’ve ever known is migraines and everything I ever did was dominated by them. As I said, I used to be “Ruth and her headaches” and now I’m Ruth who can do anything! I can go anywhere, commit to anything and know that migraines are no longer going to ruin my plans.
