Apex Headache Clinic cleared my 3-year migraine, meaning that I could continue to coach rugby

Following several concussions, three of which were severe, 25-year-old rugby player and Inventory Planner Jake Finlay from Co. Tyrone began experiencing headaches and migraines, over 3 years ago. Jake was advised to give up playing rugby and began coaching instead, but he was still living with constant pain. Over the years he tried everything possible to ease his headaches, with no relief. After hearing about Apex Headache Clinic in Belfast, Jake booked an appointment in desperation of getting even a little relief. Here, he shares how the clinic’s unique regime of specialist manual physiotherapy treatment for headaches and migraines, called The Nelson Headache Approach™, cleared his migraines, meaning that he could finally get his life back on track.

Jake, when did your migraines begin?

For years, I played rugby for Dungannon to an all-Ireland league level. As rugby is very physical and a contact sport, I have suffered countless concussions, three of which were severe, although that didn’t stop me playing. At the start of my sixth season, during a training session, which involved lifting weights, I began getting what I would describe as ‘tension headaches’. I saw a Consultant Neurologist and because of his advice, I stopped playing rugby, which was devastating for me. Instead, I took up coaching so that I could still be involved in some way. However, as this role involved light exercise, the headaches were still as bad as ever.

How did the pain effect your life?

It was awful. To have to give up something, which has been a massive part of your life for years is heartbreaking. I was living with constant migraines, which was making it extremely difficult to work in an office environment. I tried everything I could think of to help. I was on the strongest painkillers possible, which hardly eased the pain. I saw different physios, both through the rugby club and privately and even tried acupuncture. None of these things helped. If anyone mentioned an old wives’ tale, I’d give it a go. I was desperate and willing to try anything for a little relief.

What led you to Apex Headache Clinic?

One of my friends is a physio and she recommend Apex Headache Clinic. She’d heard about the great success the clinic was having in treating people with headaches and migraines. With nothing to lose, I booked an appointment. During my first session with Tim, he diagnosed my headaches as stemming from my neck. I couldn’t believe it – I finally felt like someone might be able to help me. After just 3-4 sessions, my headaches and migraines cleared completely. I really liked the fact that Tim has a background in sports and I felt that he genuinely cared about getting me better.

How has your life changed?

The difference that Tim has made to my day-to-day life is amazing. The pain in my head used to completely take over. Even the simple things like being able to drive at night and not worry about the headlights triggering a migraine is brilliant. It has also allowed me to continue to be involved in a coaching role within rugby. I can now be a little more hands on and not worry about it bringing on a headache.

What advice would you offer someone suffering from headaches or migraines?

Don’t put off going for treatment at Apex Headache Clinic – book an appointment straight away. I drove over an hour for each treatment and it was 100 per cent worth it. It worked for me and I’m sure that it will work for so many others.
