73-year-old Vi Kennedy had given up on ever finding relief from her headaches. She had been battling with headaches and migraines since the age of just 12 and progressively they became worse over the years. Vi, tell us when your headaches began.

I can remember getting my first migraine at the age of just 12. Back then, it was hardly recognised as anything more than a headache. I was in school at Omagh at the time. My eyes became blurry and my head was throbbing. I was sent to the sick bay and was so worried about having to get the bus home. This continued throughout my time at school, with painkillers having little effect, before eventually, they eased off for a few years. Then, as I got older, and with life’s stresses, they returned with a vengeance. If I went to bed with a headache I knew when I’d waken up the next day that the pain would be severe.

How did the pain affect your life?

When I had a migraine I felt like my head was going to burst. I was depending on painkillers to offer what little relief they could and constantly having to cancel social events. It was a nightmare. The first thing my husband would ask me every single day of our lives was how my head was.

My headache specialist physio Nicola was fantastic. After a thorough history and examination, she diagnosed my headaches as stemming from my neck. When she said this, something just clicked. I sometimes experienced neck pain in conjunction with my headaches. For the first time, I felt hope that there may actually be a cure.

Honestly, I left the first appointment feeling like I was walking on air. For me, the relief from the pain was almost instant. Between appointments for the first few weeks, I would still get the odd headache, which was a lot milder. Now, I am thrilled to say, that I am completely headache free!

I feel fantastic. I know I can make plans and my headaches won’t cause me to cancel at the last minute. Because my husband is so used to it, he still asks me every morning how my head is, and I’m so happy that I can say I’m pain-free.
